Big seas a dampener
Thursday 1 May, 2008 12:01am
BIG seas last weekend inhibited many local anglers from fishing in areas including the beach, rock and offshore scenes.
There weren't too many reports to speak of but this weekend should be different. The most encouraging reports came from the lake where plenty of bream were caught. Mainly smaller fish to 30cm from areas such as Salts Bay and Marks Point drop over as well as around the yacht moorings in front of Marks Point marina. Mullet proved to be the best bait.
Some game boats tried their luck for marlin out wide on the continental shelf and there was a report of a small striped marlin being captured on Saturday. The water temperature out there was still 20 degrees with plenty of baitfish.
Peter Hopkins from Lake Munmorah fished one of the wrecks in Belmont Bay on Saturday night for bream and flathead. Peter said the water was like black tea and went onto say that he lost plenty of tackle to large sharks that kept taking his live baits while targeting jewfish.
Good weekend ahead
With the forecast for this weekend being 10 to 15 knot westerly winds and no rain, we can look forward to a good weekend's fishing.
Try the lower end of the lake for some tailor and I have also heard that some nice blue swimmer crabs have been taken in front of Coal Point headland and on the northern side of Pulbah Island.
The offshore will be well worth a shot especially in the shallow waters of 15 to 25m off Redhead, Dudley Merewether and south off Catherine Hill Bay.
These rocky spots will hold up snapper and bream feeding after the turbulent weekend just past.
