Trail bikes a real trial

ILLEGAL trail bike riding is growing out of control in bushland and residential areas at Lake Macquarie, independent State MP Greg Piper has told parliament.
Twenty-five unregistered trail bike riders have been charged this year so far in Lake Macquarie local area command, with a further 17 riders issued with infringement notices. Last year police laid 56 charges and confiscated two unregistered trail bikes, with 220 infringement notices issued.
Mr Piper has asked Police Minister David Campbell to outline a law enforcement plan for the growing problem. Mr Campbell said Lake Macquarie police conducted at least four large multi-agency operations each year, teaming up with National Parks and Forests NSW to combat illegal activity.
"It is an issue of importance around the state," Mr Campbell said. "I understand that the Lake Macquarie local area command currently has two trail bikes and has officers trained in the use of those vehicles.
"The officers are involved in both reactive and proactive activities targeting illegal trail bike riding within the Lake Macquarie command."
