Salvos to doorknock

RISING interest rates, the rental crisis and fuel costs are all adding to an escalating demand on the services of the Salvation Army in the Hunter and Newcastle areas.
On the eve of this year's Red Shield appeal, spokesman Major David Eyles said more and more people were seeking assistance.
"People who may have been just managing are now struggling or even going backwards," Major Eyles said. "Last year's storms had a great effect on some people which is still being felt."
On a national level, the Salvation Army has just sent $500,000 from its disaster relief fund to Burma where up to 100,000 people have been killed and hundreds of thousands injured and left homeless in the wake of Cyclone Nargis.
The Red Shield collectors will come doorknocking on the weekend of May 24 - 25 and donations can also be made on 137 258, at any Westpac branch, at www.salvos.org.au or to PO Box 682 The Junction 2291.
"We always need more volunteers," Major Eyles said. "There is a little bit of flexibility in the collection hours."
