HARD working and dedicated rural fire service volunteers will be thanked for their commitment at a special Volunteer Appreciation Day this Sunday.
Around 95 members of the Lake Macquarie and Wyong rural fire services will line up to be presented with national and long service medals. State Emergency Services Minister Nathan Rees will present the medals at the event to be held in the Wyee Community hall.
Also attending will be Shortland Federal Labor MP Jill Hall, Wyong State Labor MP David Harris, Charlton Federal Labor MP Greg Combet, Wyong Deputy Mayor Ron Stevens and Region East Manager Chief Superintendent Steve Yorke who will represent the RFS commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons.
It is the first Volunteer Appreciation Day which is set to become an annual event. "The day is to show the RFS appreciates not only the hard-working volunteers, but also their partners and families who support them," Wyong and Lakes spokeswoman Fiona Davis said.
"The RFS recognises the commitment is not only that of the volunteer but the families as well.
"The medal recipients represent the dedication, commitment and service to the Lake Macquarie and Wyong communities."
Aside from the medal presentation, members and their families will enjoy a day of entertainment with lots of giveaways and a lunch.
On the same day Chaplain Ian Spall will bless the fleet of Lake Macquarie and Wyong districts for the coming fire season.
